Large-Eddy Simulations #228 and #229: (Upwind)
LES RUN #228 and 229: Upwind simulations. Both shear driven.
Both simulations are the same except #228 has Arakawa & Lamb
and #229 has momentum conserving. Also both domains are
smaller than #225: 40 x 40 x 69 points.
Both simulations have
dx=dy=dz==15-m;
periodic lateral boundary conditions;
entire domain over snow-covered land;
VDKR=HDKR=0.05; and
horizontally homogeneous initial condition according to observations.
The initial temperature and dew-point profile was from the radiosonde and the
initial wind speed and direction profiles were from
linear fits to the data as shown in the first frame
of the animations (the thumbnail is the last frame of the animation.)

LES#228: The following animation shows the
evolution of mean profiles (red lines) of wind speed, direction,
temperature and dewpoint as well as vertical velocity
on a east-west oriented vertical slice.
LES#229: The following animation shows the
evolution of mean profiles (red lines) of wind speed, direction,
temperature and dewpoint as well as vertical velocity
on a east-west oriented vertical slice.
LES#228: The following animation shows simulated lidar backscatter on a horizontal
plane 7.5 m above the surface.
